Leveraging Your Balance Sheet: How Asset-Based Lending Can Fuel Business Growth

Every business reaches a point where additional capital is needed—whether to finance growth, manage seasonal cash flow, purchase inventory, or capitalize on new opportunities. For established companies with valuable business assets, Asset-Based Lending (ABL) can provide a flexible source of working capital without requiring them to give up equity or wait for long-term cash flow to catch up.

At Cogent Bank, we work with businesses across a wide range of industries to structure financing solutions that support growth while maximizing the value of their existing assets.

What Is Asset-Based Lending?

Asset-Based Lending (ABL) is a financing solution that allows businesses to borrow against the value of eligible assets on their balance sheet. Rather than relying solely on historical profitability or cash flow, an ABL facility uses business assets as collateral to establish a revolving line of credit.

Receivables do most of the work in an ABL facility, and other assets can by layered in alongside them including:

  • Accounts receivable – the invoices your customers have not yet paid, and the engine of most facilities
  • Inventory- financed alongside a receivables line rather than on its own
  • Equipment and machinery – generally handled through a companion term loan
  • Commercial real estate assets – occasionally part of the picture, typically financed separately under a mortgage

Accounts receivable are usually where a facility starts, because invoices are the most liquid asset on the balance sheet and the easiest to verify. Inventory, equipment and real estate build on that foundation.

How Does Asset-Based Lending Work?

An asset-based line of credit is designed to provide ongoing access to working capital. Your borrowing capacity is based on the value of your eligible collateral, and as those assets grow or change, your available credit may adjust accordingly. That calculation is called a borrowing base: an agreed percentage of your eligible collateral, updated as invoices are created and collected, so the line moves in step with the business. Unlike a traditional loan that provides a lump sum upfront, ABL functions as a revolving line of credit. You can draw funds as needed, repay them, and borrow again—giving your business greater flexibility to respond to changing operating needs.

Customer payments come into an account at the bank and are applied to your balance, which frees up availability again as your invoices are paid. That cycle is what allows the line to flex with your sales instead of sitting at a fixed limit. Because interest is charged only on the amount you borrow, you pay for the capital you actually use. Facilities also carry monitoring and annual fees, and we will walk through the full cost with you before you commit.

Asset-Based Lending vs. Traditional Business Loans

While both financing options provide access to capital, they serve different purposes.

A traditional business term loan typically evaluates:

  • Historical financial performance
  • Cash flow
  • Profitability
  • Business and owner creditworthiness

The loan is repaid through fixed monthly payments over a predetermined period.

Asset-Based Lending, on the other hand, focuses primarily on the value and quality of your eligible collateral. Instead of receiving a one-time lump sum, businesses gain access to a revolving credit facility that can be used whenever working capital is needed. The trade-off is a closer working relationship: you share more information, more often, than you would on a term loan.

For companies with strong assets but fluctuating cash flow, ABL often provides greater flexibility than a traditional term loan.

What Assets Can Be Used as Collateral?

The amount available to borrow depends on the type, quality, and liquidity of the assets being pledged. How quickly your customers pay, and how concentrated your customer base is, both influence how much a given asset will support.

Eligible collateral often includes:

  • Accounts receivable – Generally the strongest form of collateral due to their liquidity. Not every invoice makes the cut: very old balances, credits, amounts owed by affiliated companies, and outsized exposure to a single customer are typically set aside, so a line is sized on eligible receivables rather than the full aging.
  • Inventory – Finished goods and eligible raw materials may qualify, depending on the business and industry, and are usually financed alongside a receivables line. An appraisal is sometimes part of the process.
  • Equipment and machinery – Manufacturing and specialized equipment can often support financing.
  • Commercial real estate – In some situations, real estate may also be considered.

In general, the more marketable and liquid an asset is, the greater its borrowing potential.

Which Businesses Benefit Most from Asset-Based Lending?

Asset-Based Lending is particularly well suited for companies that sell to other businesses on terms, carry significant working assets, and have changing capital needs. Because the line runs on your numbers, borrowers typically have a few years of operating history and the ability to produce reliable financial and receivables reporting.

Manufacturers

Manufacturers often carry substantial inventories while waiting for customer payments. ABL can provide the working capital needed to purchase raw materials, increase production, or bridge the gap between production and payment.

Distributors and Importers

Distributors and importers frequently manage large inventory levels while navigating supply chain fluctuations and extended payment cycles. Asset-based financing can help maintain inventory levels and support ongoing operations without disrupting cash flow.

Wholesalers and Retail Suppliers

Companies that supply retailers often build inventory months ahead of seasonal demand, then wait on payment terms once the goods ship. An asset-based line can fund the build, and the resulting receivables keep availability working through the season.

Staffing and Business Services Companies

Staffing firms, PEOs, and other business service providers meet payroll every week but invoice their clients far less often. An asset-based facility bridges that gap, and in the right circumstances can even advance against work already performed but not yet billed.

Recurring Revenue and Subscription Businesses

Software-as-a-service providers, alarm monitoring companies, fire protection and commercial cleaning firms, landscapers, and pest control operators all bill under renewable contracts. Cogent Bank offers recurring revenue lines sized against that contracted monthly revenue, with contract strength and customer retention driving how much is available.

Growing Companies

Rapid growth often requires additional inventory, equipment, staffing, or expanded facilities before new revenue is realized. Asset-Based Lending provides businesses with access to capital that grows alongside their assets.

Acquisition Opportunities

Businesses pursuing acquisitions may use Asset-Based Lending to finance expansion by leveraging the working assets of the combined business, where those assets support the facility. Every situation is different, so these are structured one at a time.

Why Businesses Choose Asset-Based Lending

Asset-Based Lending offers several advantages for businesses seeking flexible financing:

  • Access to working capital without diluting ownership
  • Revolving credit that grows with eligible assets
  • Interest charged only on funds borrowed
  • Improved liquidity to support day-to-day operations
  • Financing that can help fund growth, acquisitions, inventory, payroll, and seasonal needs

For many companies, ABL provides the financial flexibility needed to respond quickly to opportunities while maintaining healthy cash flow.

What the Process Looks Like

An asset-based facility is built on your collateral, so the process looks a little different from a conventional loan. Here is the shape of it:

  • Getting acquainted – we review your financials, your receivables aging, and your customer base, and spend time with your team. Larger facilities also include an on-site look at the collateral.
  • Clearing the path – if another lender already holds a claim on your receivables, it is either paid off at closing or we reach an agreement with that lender.
  • Day to day – you report your collateral on a regular schedule, customer payments come into an account at the bank, and availability refreshes as invoices are paid.
  • Staying in sync – we stay close to the receivables and the financials throughout the year. Most borrowers tell us the visibility it creates is useful well beyond the loan.
