As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, it is a time to reflect on the people and values that have shaped the nation since its founding. America is a country built by people willing to take risks, pursue opportunities, and build a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities. From those who arrived seeking a better future to those who chose careers dedicated to serving others, their stories continue to strengthen the communities we call home.
For Jonathon Dech, Vice President, Commercial Relationship Manager at Cogent Bank, those values have shaped his journey every step of the way.
The foundation of his journey began with his family. Jonathon’s mother immigrated to the United States from Mexico City in pursuit of opportunity. Through determination and hard work, she earned her nursing degree from the University of Central Florida and went on to become a nurse manager, helping establish a cancer treatment unit at what was then Florida Hospital.
Watching her build a life centered on service left a lasting impression on him.
Her story showed Jonathon what was possible through perseverance, sacrifice, and a commitment to helping others. It also instilled a deep appreciation for the opportunities available in this country and the responsibility that comes with giving back to the community.
Like many young Americans, Jonathon was still discovering what he wanted for his future. What he did know was that he wanted to challenge himself and contribute to something greater than himself. At just 17 years old, he joined the Florida Army National Guard, beginning a journey of service that would shape both his personal and professional life for years to come.
As an Avenger System Repairer, Jonathon was responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting critical military equipment. The role demanded discipline, accountability, and attention to detail. More importantly, it reinforced the value of teamwork, trust, and leadership. Every mission depended on individuals working together toward a common goal, often under pressure and in demanding circumstances.
The discipline and leadership skills he developed in the military continued to serve him after college, eventually leading him to a veteran internship program that introduced him to the banking industry. The opportunity provided exposure to underwriting, credit analysis, and portfolio management, opening the door to a career he had never previously considered.
Looking back, Jonathon believes his career has been shaped by a willingness to step outside his comfort zone and embrace new opportunities. Each experience helped build the foundation for the next, ultimately leading him to Cogent Bank. It is a lesson he now shares with young professionals as they begin their own careers.
Today, as Vice President, Commercial Relationship Manager at Cogent Bank, Jonathon works closely with business owners and community leaders throughout Central Florida, helping local businesses grow and strengthening relationships that have made Cogent a trusted commercial bank in Florida. While his role looks different than it did during his years in uniform, many of the same principles continue to guide his work. Building trust, solving problems, and helping others achieve their goals remains at the center of everything he does.
At Cogent Bank, those values are reflected in a relationship-focused approach to banking. As one of the business banks in Florida focused on long-term relationships, Cogent works closely with clients to understand their goals and challenges. Through that approach, Jonathon helps businesses navigate obstacles, pursue growth opportunities, and create lasting impacts within their communities.
As America marks 250 years of history, Jonathon sees many of the same values that shaped the nation’s founding and his own journey continuing to strengthen communities today. He believes strong communities are built when people invest in one another, support local businesses, and remain committed to serving a purpose greater than themselves.
His story is a reminder that the American dream continues to be shaped by individuals who embrace opportunity, answer the call to serve, and work to leave their communities stronger than they found them.
At Cogent Bank, those same values continue to guide the associates who serve clients every day, and we thank Jonathon for his service. Whether through military service, community leadership, entrepreneurship, or relationship banking, the spirit of service remains one of the country’s greatest strengths and one that will continue to shape the next generation of American stories.
